Smoky Mountains covered in snow in the winter

Snow is covering the treetops and families are hiking the mountains to see the icy waterfalls. This February you can experience the snowy side of the Smokies at the Jewels from the Sky event in Gatlinburg.

The event will be held on February 22, 2014 at the Sugarlands Visitor Center Training Room. Focusing on the snowfall in the Smokies, Instructor Kris Light will host a presentation that will cover the following topics:

  • What happens during a snowstorm
  • Diversity of ice crystals
  • Differences in snow crystals
  • Beauty of ice crystals
  • Shapes, sizes, clarity of snow crystals based on cloud conditions

Kris Light has been teaching outreach programs in the area for over 25 years. This year, her program is limited to the first 50 people who register by February 20, so you don’t want to miss your chance to reserve your spot!

The program costs $10 for members of the Great Smoky Mountains Association (the national park’s oldest non-profit funding partner), and $35 for nonmembers. The $35 includes a gift or personal membership as well. To register for the event in Gatlinburg, you can send an email to [email protected] with the subject “Jewels.”
