Family skiing on mountain

Coming up in just a few short weeks, Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort will celebrate the second of two big anniversaries for the Gatlinburg attraction. In 2013 Ober Gatlinburg celebrated it’s 50th birthday as being the first and only ski resort in Tennessee. Adding to the excitement, the snowy attraction will once again be the host of the Special Olympics Tennessee Winter Games.

Celebrating 29 exciting years, the Special Olympics Tennessee Winter Games gives over 140 athletes with intellectual abilities the chance to compete for a gold medal in the speed skating, alpine skiing and snowboarding categories. Athletes will be divided and judged based on age and ability. This year’s event will begin on January 27 with the ceremonial lighting of the Special Olympics flame at 9 a.m., and the games will conclude with the awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. the following day.

The Special Olympic games are free to compete and cheer. All funds are provided by volunteers and donations.
