Mermaids Are Real at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

Mermaid under the sea
June 26, 2014

When you visit Ripley’s Aquarium, you’ll see all sorts of undersea life: sharks, stingrays, penguins…and mermaids! This summer, the world’s most famous mythical ocean dwellers are visiting Gatlinburg as part of Ripley’s Live Mermaid Shows. Guests at the aquarium will watch mermaids swim in shark infested tanks, and even have the chance to pose for a picture with the stars of the show. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the mermaids at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies.

Live Mermaid Shows at Ripley’s Aquarium

The Live Mermaid Shows are like nothing you’ve ever seen before! Two mermaids will perform gorgeous undersea acrobatics in a 20 foot tank filled with small sharks and stingrays. If you’ve never met a mermaid, this is your chance! Before the show, the mermaids will be happy to answer questions, pose for pictures, and give out plenty of high fives. For a preview of the show, check out the video below:

How did Ripley’s get the most elusive and legendary sea creature to appear in their show? Some people claim that the mermaids are portrayed by talented divers in 30 pound latex mermaid tails. Here at Timber Tops we have another theory: the mermaids are on vacation. Just like ordinary humans, mermaids love to visit the Great Smoky Mountains, but it’s hard for them to do typical tourist activities without legs. So, instead of hiking and going to dinner theaters, the mermaids enjoy Gatlinburg from the comfort of their tanks at Ripley’s Aquarium!

Show Schedule

The Live Mermaid Shows are running three times a day from now until the end of July. You can catch the shows at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. There are also special meet and greet sessions with the mermaids at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
